Continuing Education Requirements

Dental Assistants who hold two or more certificates authorized by Chapter 114 will be required to complete 12 hours of Continuing Education per year to renewal all certificates held by the dental assistant.  (Note to Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Certificate Holders: There continues to be no annual CE requirement if you hold a Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Certificate therefore, Dental Assistants should not count this certificate in the total number of certificates they hold).

Important Information:   
The SBDE Radiology Certificate has expired and is no longer issued by the Dental Board.  This certificate was replaced by the Dental Assistant Registration Certificate.  To make x-rays legally in Texas a Dental Assistant must hold a Dental Assistant Registration Certificate.  To qualify for this certificate a dental assistant must pass a course given by a Dental Board-approved course provider then apply with the Dental Board:  Click  HERE  to select an approved course provider and print an application.

Continuing Education Coursework Requirements

Dental Assistants who ONLY hold the RDA Certificate:
    -  Complete 6 hours of CE annually.
        --  All CE hours can be completed by self-study, interactive computer courses, or classroom lecture courses. 
        --  All CE hours must be related to the duties of a dental assistant.

Dental Assistants who ONLY hold the Pit and Fissure Sealant Certificate:
    -  Pit & Fissure Sealant Certificates issued after September 1, 2009: 
           -- Dental Assistant must complete 6 hours of CE related to the duties of a dental assistant.

    -  Pit & Fissure Sealant Certificates issued before September 1, 2009: 
           -- Dental Assistant must complete 6 hours of CE in technical and scientific coursework.  No more than 3 hours may be self-study.  

Dental Assistants who hold
BOTH the Pit and Fissure Sealant Certificate and RDA Certificate:
   -  Pit & Fissure Sealant Certificates issued after September 1, 2009:
          --  Dental Assistant must complete 12 hours of CE related to the duties of a dental assistant.
          --  All CE hours can be completed by self-study, interactive computer courses, or classroom lecture courses. 

    -  Pit & Fissure Sealant Certificates issued before September 1, 2009: 
          --  Dental Assistant must complete:

  --  6 hours of CE in technical & scientific coursework  (No more than 3 hours may be self-study)
  --  6 hours of CE related to the duties of a dental assistant.          

Additional Information on CE Requirements:

   -  All Dental Assistants shall select and participate in CE courses offered or endorsed by:

Dental schools, dental hygiene schools, or dental assisting schools that have been accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association (ADA) or nationally recognized dental, dental hygiene or dental assisting organizations.  (Refer to Rule 104.2 for a list of approved CE Providers).

   -  PALS and ACLS training may be used towards CE hours.

   -  CE Hours cannot be carried over from year-to-year by Dental Assistants.

   -  Annual OSHA Training cannot be used towards CE.  CE in Infection Control earned separate from Annual OSHA Training may be counted towards CE.

   -  Basic Life Support CPR cannot be used toward CE hours. 

   -  Dental Assistants are responsible for maintaining a record of their earned CE credits for three years.   

   -  Dental Assistants are not required to send proof of completed CE unless requested by the Board.


-  RDA Certificate Holders - CE Requirement during the First Registration Period. Dental Assistants who hold the RDA Certificate are not required to complete CE for this certificate during their first registration period.  After you renew your first RDA registration certificate, the Dental Board will issue your second RDA Registration Certificate that will be valid for a 12-month (annual) registration period.  During this 12-month (annual) registration period, and every year thereafter, a Dental Assistant is required to have all CE completed before the expiration date listed on their RDA registration certificate.
