Texas Registration Requirements

The RDA (Radiology Certificate) Credential is an Optional Certificate for Dental Assistants.  The Dental Practice Act regulates all dental auxiliaries who take x-rays, monitor the administration of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Inhalation Conscious Sedation, apply Pit and Fissure Sealants and perform Coronal Polishing.

Radiology Certifications issued by other state regulatory agencies are not recognized in Texas.

Who Needs to Register with the Dental Board?

-  Dental Assistants who make x-rays in Texas must register with the State Board of Dental Examiners (SBDE).

-  Dental Assistants who do not make x-rays in Texas do not need to register with the SBDE.

WHICH CATEGORY APPLIES TO YOU?

I have made x-rays as a Dental Assistant If this statement applies to you, regardless of what State you have ever worked in as a dental assistant, you must register with the Texas Dental Board before you can make x-rays legally in the State of Texas.  Once you register with the Texas Dental Board and display your certificate you may begin making x-rays again.

Question:  Can I make x-rays while I am waiting for my application to be approved by the SBDE?

Answer:   No, unless you are a newly hired dental assistant and in your first year of employment in a dental office.

I have never made x-rays while working as a Dental Assistant.  You are permitted to make x-rays in Texas for one year from the first day of being hired as a dental assistant under the direct supervision of a dentist.  During this first year of employment you will want to consider taking one of the Dental Board-approved courses listed below to continue making x-rays in your 2nd, 3rd and future years of service as a dental assistant.

Moving to Texas soon and want to work as a Dental Assistant?

Dental Assistants who relocate to Texas who have made x-rays may work in Texas as a dental assistant; however, may not make x-rays in Texas until they hold the Texas RDA Certificate and display it where services are provided.

Dental Assistants who have worked in another state who have never made x-rays may work in Texas as a dental assistant and may make x-rays for one year from beginning the first day they are hired under the direct supervision of a dentist.  To continue making x-rays after the first year of employment the dental assistant will need to register with the Dental Board before their first year of employment ends.
