New Anesthesia Permit Regulations

In August 2011, the Dental Board amended rules regarding the administration of anesthesia.  The new rules now mirror the American Dental Association (ADA) Guidelines for the administration of sedation.

New permits now reflect the  level of sedation  VERSUS  route of administration.  Most licensees who previously held nitrous, parenteral, and/or deep sedation permits will not be impacted.

The group that was impacted that those wre dentists who held an Enteral Sedation Permit on June 1, 2011 and wish authority to administer a moderate level of sedation.  Per the ADA Guidelines, the former SBDE Enteral Permit was automatically migrated to the equivalent Level 1 (Minimal Sedation) permit.

Those dentists who held an Enteral Sedation Permit on June 1, 2011 who wish to administer more than a minimal combination need to apply for the new Level 2 - Moderate Enteral Sedation Permit.

Continuing Education and Advanced Life Support Changes
The new rules also require continuing education and possible advanced life support certifications for those that hold permits.  Continuing Education requirements for anesthesia permits will be imposed following the 2012 license renewal.  Additionally, effective January 1, 2012, if you sedate children ages 12 or below, you are required to hold a PALS certification.
